An interesting debate took place recently over the use of language in perpetuating sexism.
The law has enforced behaviour change and set acceptable standards such that if one transgresses they can be called to account.
But what of the subtle nuance of language? Those phrases we each hear from time to time. Perhaps we are even guilty of saying them.
“Man up”
“Play like a girl”
“That time of month”
… and many more.
Some may argue that we have far more important things to be concerned about than some everyday language phrases. Yet it is that very language that underpins beliefs. Until you shift beliefs you won’t see fundamental acceptance of equitable treatment.
