An excellent segment on SBS recently demonstrating the obviousness of the gender pay gap. Pairs of children, one male on female, were given a cup of lollies (candy) but the girls cups were not as full as the boys. When told the boys got more because they were, well, boys the confusion was obvious. So was the disappointment and the sense of injustice. The reactions of the boys was interesting. One was kind of happy he got more for no reason other than his gender. Others were unsure how to react. And one saw the disparity as unfair.
When asked, ‘was it fair?’ all agreed that it was not if the only reason for the inequity was gender.
When asked, ‘how do we fix it?’ the answer was obvious and immediate. The boys began to share their spoils and in many cases overcompensated by giving the girls more than an even share.
If kids can ‘get it’ … why can’t we as adults?
Definitely worth watching this segment …
